We are incredibly proud to share that Eastside Arm Wrestling has been featured in a prominent two-page spread by the Australia and New Zealand Association (ANZA) in Singapore! Published in their May/June 2026 issue, the column "Get A Grip" takes an in-depth look at how arm wrestling has evolved a from casual pub activity into a highly structured, competitive sport right here on the Red Dot.
Here’s a breakdown of the incredible journey highlighted by ANZA, celebrating our growth and the strong international bonds fueling our community.

From Schoolyard Challenges to World Stages: The Growth of Singapore Arm Wrestling

As detailed in the column , the roots of our local scene trace back to simple schoolboy rivalries. Eastside founder Gregory Yeo recalls challenging classmates between lessons at Maris Stella High School back in 2010. That early passion connected him with Valen Low, the founder and first president of Singapore Armwrestling—the official governing body that laid the groundwork for the sport locally.
In the early days, the Singaporean arm wrestling community comprised no more than ten active arm wrestlers at any given time, almost all of whom were unfunded students, participating in the sport out of pure passion and drive. Weekly practices in those days were conducted at Valen's own family residence—in the corner of their living balcony. This quiet, grassroots beginnings of the sport was the initial seed planted that would eventually grow into the thriving community of arm wrestlers that we see today.
The sport has come a long way since those early days:
The Digital Boom: During the pandemic, restricted public meet-ups shifted the focus online. Inspired by global strength icons, Greg began creating content. His training videos, matches, and tips racked up nearly 30 million views across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, bringing massive mainstream eyes to Singaporean arm wrestling.
Global Recognition: This digital momentum translated directly to puller power. At the 2023 IFA World Championships in Malaysia, Greg secured a phenomenal third-place podium finish in the Men's 78kg right arm category.
Professionalizing the Sport: Moving away from informal practices at void decks and homes, Greg and Head of Operations Syed Uzair opened Eastside Arm Wrestling in Changi in September 2025. Designed more like a community clubhouse than a rigid gym, it has provided the dedicated space needed to safely train everyone from complete novices to seasoned pullers.
A Global Community: Bridging Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand
One of the most heartwarming highlights of the ANZA column is the recognition of our thriving international friendships. Arm wrestling is a universal language, and Eastside has become a mandatory pitstop for overseas pullers visiting Singapore.
The feature beautifully illustrates the deep camaraderie between Singapore and the ANZA communities:
Welcoming Down Under Champions: Earlier this year, Australia’s 85kg Victoria State and Oceanic Title Holder, Leo Marcus, visited our club. As shown in the photos on the first page of the column. Leo stepped up to the table for intense sparring sessions and shared invaluable knowledge with our team, including Eastside member Barnabas Koh.
Fostering International Alliances: These visits are more than just training; they are a bridge. As Greg noted in the article, "These moments are great for our team as we learn more about the global community and training culture in other countries, as well as foster friendships overseas."
The support from an established organization like ANZA underscores how deeply rooted the friendship is between our nations, bound by a shared love for sportsmanship, safety, and community.
Look to the Future: The Next Horizon
We are just getting started. As highlighted in the column, Eastside and Singapore Armwrestling are actively working to secure National Sports Association (NSA) status with SportSG, which will unlock greater recognition and funding, and help bring the sport into schools. Furthermore, regional efforts are underway to include arm wrestling in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, with talks already happening for a demo sport push at the 2027 Malaysia Games.
Whether you are here to build world-class forearm strength or simply to enjoy the camaraderie of a great community, there is a spot for you at the table.
